What types of scoliosis can be treated with endoscopic surgery?

Endoscopic surgery is a developing field and at this time our experience has been limited to rigid curvatures that would otherwise require a large incision to gain access to the anterior portion of the spine. Rigid curvatures are difficult to correct by a posterior surgery alone. By comparing the degree of curvature between the standing Xray and a bending supine (lying down) Xray, the degree of curve rigidity is evaluated. When planning surgical correction of a scoliosis, adding an anterior portion to the surgical plan, can lead to a more controlled and more significant correction of the spinal deformity.

Can endoscopic surgery be applied to the lumbar spine?

Anterior endoscopic surgery at the level of the lumbar spine is possible and may be applied in performing a fusion/stabilization procedure. The lumbar discs may be removed by endoscopy and then a fusion can be performed by placing bone or a fusion cage. This does not necessarily prevent the need for a posterior stabilization procedure.
